Work
No. 4
Description
Kim's one unornamented piece in this group: a low lacquer table built on joinery alone, the black surface left to carry the work rather than any applied pattern. Set beside the boxes, it argues that restraint and density are two settings of the same practice, not opposing ones.
Technique
Chaehwa Chilgi: repeating motifs drawn by hand in lacquer pigment, layer upon layer, rather than inlaid; a technique historically prior to najeon (mother-of-pearl inlay) in Korea.
