Nong (Han Ki-seok) / 1930 - 2011

Han Ki-seok, working under the name Nong, built his exhibition history in the United States before establishing a comparable presence in Korea, a reversal of the more typical trajectory among Korean artists of his generation. Beginning in 1965, he held solo exhibitions across American museums, followed between 1967 and 1971 by exhibitions in California, Texas, France, China, and Japan. His first appearance in the Korean art scene came only in November 1971, at Shinsegae Gallery, Seoul.

His work is held in the permanent collections of over thirty institutions internationally, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, alongside museums in the United States, China, and India. He died in 2011, leaving a body of work whose scope is now fixed.
